Enterprises that opt for SIP trunking have two options, a centralized or distributed architecture, both of which have their benefits and challenges. When decision-makers are considering which model to install within their organizations, they need to take the time to understand how employees operate on a fundamental level and implement the offering that enables individuals to meet mission-critical objectives.
For the most part, however, businesses tend to choose a centralized model, which means all VoIP traffic is consolidated through a single or only a few sites, according to a No Jitter report. This type of offering is different from the distributed version, which requires executives to leverage SIP trunks at every access point, and is often deployed by enterprises because centralized solutions are easier to manage.
No Jitter stated that a centralized SIP trunking system allows companies to be more efficient by reducing the chances of “losing” bandwidth, something that usually happens when using a distributed model. As a result, consolidated SIP strategies make it easier for companies to support a remote workforce that exists in multiple locations and time zones, as executives only need to monitor several critical circuits.
Furthermore, centralized SIP trunking systems generally cost less than traditional telecommunications platforms. In fact, No Jitter noted that firms can often save anywhere between 30 to 50 percent when migrating to a consolidated SIP service from traditional TDM offerings. Because all of the collaborative resources, such as PBXs and session border controllers (SBCs), are concentrated, enterprises are also able to reduce maintenance expenses through the elimination of those unnecessary tools.
A separate report by a major SBC provider noted that centralized SIP trunking systems generally produce a larger return on investment for most enterprises because executives do not necessarily need to invest in extraneous hardware, as most solutions are hosted within the existing data center. This is especially important in today’s business world, as the unpredictable economy continues to send mixed signals and encourage decision-makers to make the most of each dollar.
Still, sometimes the distributed model is a better fit for some organizations. For this reason, companies need to work with a trusted SIP provider to understand which approach best suits their short- and long-term demands, as investing in a particular version only to find it does not necessarily align with corporate objectives can result in significant complications.
